At the center of Thomas Bernhard's novel "Das Kalkwerk," on which Helmut Oehring's latest music theater work is based, is a world-changing study of hearing, which Konrad, the autodidact, will never write down. Supposedly ideal research conditions led him to move to the abandoned lime works, where he subjects his wheelchair-bound wife to monstrous experiments on the effects of sounds, words and sentence fragments. When he finally kills his wife, we gradually learn what happened in the lime works from the villagers' accounts.
